Finances:
A little over $400 in the kitty. Not many paid up members though - subs for 2009 are now!

Sixways:
Sunday 5th July in Cambridge at the Gaslight Theatre, Alpha Street (Hamilton end), Cambridge. Start time is 10:00am at the theatre – anyone who is keen for breakfast we will meet up at the In-Stone Cafe on Victoria Street, at 9:00am (next to the Cambridge Shell service station on SH1)
This is a great day out to socialise with fellow photographers from around the region and a chance to hear critique of a wide range of images. Always a very informative day.

DVD's
The club has copies of the excellent BBC series 'The Genius Of Photography', and the Annie Leibovitz documentary 'Life Through A Lens' for club members to borrow.

Matamata Christmas Parade
What, already? Well, yes... a suggestion was made for the club to have a float in the Xmas parade at the end of this year as a way to promote the club locally. We have the talent (otherwise we wouldn't be engaged in this artistic endeavour!) and, apparently, access to a small flat-bed truck. What we need next to make this happen is your creative ideas for the float design. Please bring these along to the next meeting.

Photography & Photoshop Skills
Podcasts:
Within The Frame: Using the principles set forth in his book, photographer and humanitarian David duChemin critiques images that members of Peachpit's Within the Frame flickr group have posted. http://www.peachpit.com/podcasts/channel.aspx?c=159bdd23-69e4-48ca-9083-de02e56232f9&rll=1. This is also available on iTunes - search for the podcast 'Within the Frame'.
Moment It Clicks: Peachpit authors/photographers share their own "moment it clicks" inspirational story. You'll see one of their own favourite pictures, learn what digital photography equipment they used, and see how you, too, can achieve the perfect shot. http://www.peachpit.com/podcasts/channel.aspx?c=81d93631-4fba-4aa8-8a6d-515539031d7d&rll=1

Shooting ideas for the coming month:
10-13 June 2009 National Field Days at Mystery Creek, Hamilton
18 Jun to 25 Jul NZ Schools Photographic Competition 2009, at Artspost, Hamilton.

Judging:
The judge this month was Scott, from the Cambridge Camera Club who judged our Theme images 'Dusk til Dawn'. Many thanks to Scott for the time spent critiquing our images, and coming over to Matamata to present his critique to the club.
Honours went to:
Carl, for 'Hamilton Lake'
Sarah, for both 'Night Chair' and 'Whangamata Dawn'
Pam, for 'Ohope Beach 007'
Robbo, for 'Rowing For Dan'
Brie, for 'Sky City Up through the Tree by Night'
Scott also recommended the book 'The Photographers Eye' by Micheal Freeman as an excellent guide for photographic critique.

Club Website:
The Matamata Camera Club website has a fresh new look for 2009, have a look at http://matamatacameraclub.bravehost.com/. We would like to showcase our members best work, so please send me up to 6 of your best images to caproff [@] movingstill.net.nz and I'll upload them to the club website. We now have sets by Gilbert and Dan posted.
It was also raised at the meeting about the club having its own website address as this would make it easier for people to find us on the interweb, and far easier for members to remember. To register a URL is only about $25/year. The issue is currently we do not have to pay for any hosting of the website (it is ad supported) and we would have to arrange some other hosting. We will look into this and advise next meeting.
On a related note, the club has had its first enquiry through the dPhoto magazine website listing!

July Theme:
The set theme for next month is ‘Wabi Sabi'.
We had an explanation of the theme at the meeting which is a Japanese aesthetic of beauty described in its simplest translation as 'the beauty of imperfection'. Key elements we are looking for in this themes images are: asymmetry, simplicity, basic, raw & natural, tranquillity.
For further reading see;

http://www.wabisabi.ca/a_bit_about_wabisabi.html
and search Google Images for 'Wabi sabi'
Also worth further reading are articles on Haiku poetry and Matsuo Bashō.
Remember to email your theme images to Sarah at essjaynz@gmail.com
