Field Trips - Past:
24th August (Sunday) - NZIPP Infocus Convention and Trade Show.
Carl, Gilbert, Dan & Sarah met at the Trade Show at Sebel Trinity Wharf Hotel, on a very wet Sunday morning. As well as a fairly low-key trade show, there was an exhibition of prints by NZIPP members that was really worth making the trip over the hill for. About 1000 prints were on display from arguably the best talent in the country. All the images were very impressive, but what was particularly apparent is the amount of work done in post-processing (Photoshop) with a trend of dark highly saturated prints. The winning images have been printed in the October issue of The Photographers Mail, head down to your local camera store and grab a free copy.
Following lunch of fish & chips down on the wharf, we wandered around the arts shed before Gilbert invited us to his place for afternoon tea. It was very interesting to see Gilberts collection of camera’s – including a 1902 (extremely) large format Kodak studio camera as well as memorabilia of 45+ years in the trade. Thanks for having us Gilbert, especially on a less than hospitable day.
Field Trips - Coming:
21st September – Return to the Early NZ Museum at Tirau. We went there a couple of years back and it’s a really interesting place, low-key and easy access to take photo’s. Lots of little scenes amongst the museum display’s. Bring your tripod, and if you have one a fast lens would be useful.
We’re going to meet at the Cabbage Tree Café, Main Road Tirau at 10.00am for brunch before heading out to the museum about 11.00am.
Show and Tell:
Sandra from Unique Images on Firth Street came along to talk to us about printing options now available from her shop. Using a wide format printer, she is able to print your images onto almost any kind of media including paper, canvas, flag cloth, pvc banners, textured wallpaper and even a film to produce frosted glass!
Her printer goes up to 133.5cm wide, so if you want to try out some special projects (end of year theme?), or just print your camera club images, give Sandra a try.

Software:
Picasa 3 has just been released, everyone who is using it I suggest you go and grab the upgrade online. If you haven’t used Picasa, it is a great little image viewer provided free by Google that has basic photo editing and is really easy to use. Grab a copy from www.google.com/picasa
RawTherapee is a very good free RAW file converter that is very much like Adobe Photoshop Lightroom in operation. One advantage of processing RAW images is any changes you make to the image are completely reversible. Try RawTherapee from www.rawtherapee.com
PSNZ Northern Regional Convention
Will be hosted this year by the Howick Camera Club on the weekend 17-19 October with the guest speakers Peter Walton and Sheldon Muller. These conventions are well worth going to with some fabulous guest speakers, field trips etc., and a chance to meet and mix with other photographers.
We are planning to enter a set this year in the interclub competition so please start considering your best image to submit.
See the website for more info www.howickcameraclub.org.nz/regional.htm
October Theme:
The set theme for next month is ‘Yellow'.
Remember to email your theme images to Sarah at essjaynz@gmail.com
End of Year:
The December meeting this year will be held at Andy’s in Matamata, with the usual pot-luck dinner.
As part of the end of year, we have a small competition/end-of-year theme where members submit a set of minimum 6 images, in a theme of their own choice, and presented in whatever manner appeals. There is a prize each for the best theme, and most creative display chosen by a popular vote on the night.
Carl.
