AGM

Present:
Carl, Sonya, Gilbert, Dan, Sarah, Dianna, Stuart, Geoff, Don, Tina, Brie, Andy.

Apologies:
Dennis, Pam, Robbo, Ross, Louise, Jan.

Membership Cards:
Gilbert, as our Life member, was presented with the first membership card numbered #001 and cards were distributed to those attending the meeting.
Note that the new membership cards have ‘A’ or a ‘B’ suffix to your membership number – this indicates your grade (Experienced or Novice) so please ensure you use this number when submitting images for judging, either in the filename for digitally submitted images or printed clearly on the back of your print, otherwise you may be judged tougher than you should!
If you weren’t at the meeting, please contact the secretary (Sarah at essjaynz@gmail.com ) for your new membership number.

Judging:
This was the first judging completed by our new judging panel which consisted of Dennis, Sarah and guest judge Carl, and our new points based scoring system. First indications are judging will be significantly tougher than we’ve experienced previously, but should be much more consistent.
Results – February Theme: Holiday’s;
No images were awarded higher than an ‘Acceptance’.
Results – January Open Prints;
Honours: none
Highly Commended: ‘Ramshackled and Lonely’ by Dan
Merit: ‘Exploring The Underworld’ by Stuart
‘Hello There’ by Robbo

Competitions:
There are a couple of local competitions that will be running by the time you read this;
Hamilton Bridges Photo Contest. This is to support the Hospice Waikato Building Appeal. Entries close 31st March, for more info see the website http://www.imageland.co.nz/bridge.html
E:SCAPE photo competition. This one is to support the E:Scape sculpture exhibition at the Waitakaruru Arboretum and Sculpture Park and is being run by the Waitakaruru Sculpture trust. Dianna / HotShotsToGo is one of the sponsors, so please get in and have a go. The details of the competition can be found online at http://www.sculpturepark.co.nz
Don’t forget too the bi-monthly competitions featured in D-Photo magazine.

Picnik:
Sarah showed us screenshots of a new online photo editing tool called Picnik. This runs thorough you web browser (Internet Explorer or Firefox) and you simply upload your chosen image and used the tools much like installed software. As it runs online only, this would be best with a broadband internet connection. http://www.picnik.com

Show and Tell:
Geoff bought along his Mamiya RB67 kit. This is a fully manual medium format camera that looks huge compared to today’s digital cameras and the 120 film produces a negative four times the area of a 35mm film frame. Beautiful, big and very impressive, Geoff uses this camera mainly for his wedding portraits work mounted on a tripod and with a separate hand-held lightmeter.

A reminder to check into the elm-waikato group on Flickr for upcoming local events and meetups http://www.flickr.com/groups/elm-waikato/

April Theme:
The set theme for next month is ‘Negative Space’
Not sure what this is? Essentially it is ‘the space around and between the subject(s) of an image’. Here is some further reading;
