Obituary:
It was sad news to learn of the passing of Sam Harris on New Years Eve after a brief illness. Both Gilbert and Tina spoke of Sam, his career in the Police, of his shift from the South Island to the Waikato, and of his passion for photography. Sam was instrumental in reforming the Matamata Camera Club in 2001 after a hiatus of several years, and served as it’s first President in the Club’s current form. Without Sam I’m sure we wouldn’t have the vibrant, social Club that we enjoy today. He will be missed by all.
Thank you to Don who sent a card on the Club’s behalf.

Photo Judging:
We are forming a judging panel to start judging our own photos, similar to how other clubs and the PSNZ operate. Dennis O’Neil has been persuaded to lead this. The current suggestion is the judging panel meets every two months to judge our own photos, the alternate months we will organise guest judges. The details for this are still to be finalised but will be complete by the next meeting.
For guest judges we will also be providing a Judging Guide to encourage some consistency.
Our monthly Set Theme images are now to be emailed to Sarah Macmillan at essjaynz@gmail.com. If possible, and particularly for the more processed images, please send both the original image and the final version. By having both versions available for viewing at the meetings we aim to encourage discussion about digital processing as a learning opportunity for other members. Please resize images to 1024px along the longest side, at 96dpi prior to emailing.

2008 Set Themes:
March - Rural
April - Negative Space
May - Cultural / Ethnic
June - Metallic
July - Black & White (incl. Sepia)
August - Tabletop (Still-life)
September - Vanishing Points
October - Yellow
November - Harvest
December - End of year theme – minimum 6 images

Flickr:
We briefly discussed the photo community website Flickr, and the Waikato meetup group (named eye.lens.meet.[e.l.m.]waikato). Flickr is a great online resource for getting feedback on your photo’s and the meetup groups in both Auckland and Waikato meet regularly for field trips and to socialise. We will post details of future Waikato meetups – anyone is welcome to come along but to get the most out of this please join Flickr and the e.l.m.-waikato group as well.
Flickr is free to join and use, but you do need to register for a Yahoo ID (also free)

February Meeting.

President Dan took over the meeting here and elaborated a little on the tutorials that Sarah will run at future meetings. Depending on what else is organised for that particular meeting, there will be some group discussion, and also some time for a small group around a laptop for specific questions or problems members might be having. Note that there is a wealth of experience and knowledge within the club so please don’t hesitate to ask someone about anything to do with photography – a good place to start is emailing one of the committee members – they’ll point you in the right direction.

We received a brochure from Bach54 which is a rental bach down the West Coast at Mokau (on the way to New Plymouth). Prices are very reasonable starting at $85 per night for 2. This is a very scenic part of the country and a perfect spot for a weekend getaway of Photography. www.bach54.co.nz

There is a fishing trip organised for 2nd March leaving from Whangamata. If you are interested please contact Andy Minett for details mindoc [@] xtra.co.nz

Exhibitions: The Ans Westra ‘Handboek’ exhibition is on at the Tauranga Art Gallery, Wharf Street until early April. If you are in Tauranga, or thinking of something to do one weekend, make the effort to see this – it is an excellent exhibition to see, and entry is free/donation.
